Tomato Bhath (rice)

tomato bhathIt will come as no shock to you that the family is obsessed with rice. I mean, Hello!

We have rice with almost every meal, jazzing up the proceedings by having fried rice with turmeric and mustard seeds, masala rice, yoghurt and rice and of course loads and loads of biryanis. The husband sometimes has rice with ketchup but as this is a sophisticated food blog, forget I ever mentioned that.

My mum used to make tomato rice when we were kids and in spite of having the usual childish aversion to tomato I used to love it! And so does the son who will daintily pick the tomatoes out of his dal but will eat this rice with gusto.

Tomato Bhath is very simple to make and tastes good with dal, vegetables and plain yoghurt. Here is our recipe.

Tomato Bhath is very simple to make and tastes good with dal, vegetables and plain yoghurt. Here is our recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups washed basmati rice
  • 1 can of chopped tomatoes
  • 1 small piece of cinnamon
  • 1 onion (cut into slices)
  • 1 tsp. ghee (or sunflower oil if you are feeling healthy)
  • 1.5 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Note

Normally, if I am using 2 cups of rice I always ensure that I cook it with two cups of water. However, here because of the chopped tomatoes you should use 1.5 cups of water.

Directions

Step 1
Heat up the ghee or oil in a saucepan and fry the cloves and the cinnamon for a couple of minutes.
Step 2
Put in the onions and fry till they are soft and brown.
Step 3
Add in the washed rice and turn for a couple of minutes, stopping when the rice starts to stick to the bottom.
Step 4
Add in the tin of tomatoes and the salt.
Step 5
Stir until mixed.
Step 6
Add in the water and bring to boil. After this, put a lid on the saucepan and cook on simmer until the rice is cooked.
