Aloo Curry Recipe

And so the mother is back after a sojourn in Switzerland (don’t you just hate people who put in needless alliterations?) and life has become better. I don’t have to worry about cooking, making the kitchen look spic and span, and my pet hate – emptying the dish washer. Thankfully the latter is one of my mum’s great obsessions.

The son has roused himself out of his cricket stupor and has made her cook some of his favourite food – this is one of his requests. He calls this dish “red aloo (for potato) curry” and likes it so much that he has even deigned to take it to school in his lunch box today.

Here is the recipe for Kunda’s Aloo Curry.

Kunda’s Aloo curry recipe

Serves 4
Prep time 10 minutes
Cook time 20 minutes
Total time 30 minutes


  • 15 small new potatoes (cut into small cubes)
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 tin of tomatoes
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp. garam masala
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 cup of hot water
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp. oil


My mum is old school so she will wait patiently for the gravy to thicken. I, however, am always in a hurry so I add a dollop of yoghurt to thicken it.


Step 1
Heat the oil in a small saucepan
Step 2
Add in the garlic, when it's brown add in the onions
Step 3
When the onions are soft and brown, add in the potatoes and stir a bit.
Step 4
Empty the tomato tin into this mixture and put in the turmeric, garam masala, chilli powder and salt.
Step 5
Add in the hot water and cook on simmer until the potatoes are cooked.
Step 6
Garnish with coriander and serve hot with rice and yoghurt.
